Stronger Protection Against Cavities
Preventing cavities is always better than treating them. Dental sealants are one of the simplest and most effective preventive treatments available, helping protect the areas where decay most often begins, typically the chewing surfaces of the back teeth.
At West McKinney Dental & Orthodontics, we may recommend dental sealants as part of a personalized preventive care plan for children, teens, and even adults who may be more prone to cavities. The application process is quick, comfortable, and completely non-invasive. No drilling or anesthesia required.
Once applied, sealants create a protective barrier that helps keep food particles and bacteria out of the deep grooves of your molars, reducing the risk of cavities for years to come. If you're looking for an extra layer of protection for your smile, ask our team whether dental sealants are right for you or your family.

What Are Dental Sealants?
A dental sealant is a thin, protective coating made from a safe plastic resin material that is painted directly onto the chewing surfaces of the back teeth, specifically the premolars and molars. Once applied and hardened, it creates a smooth, sealed surface over the natural grooves and pits of the tooth where bacteria and food particles tend to collect.
Those grooves are the problem. The chewing surfaces of molars are deeply ridged by design, which makes them effective for grinding food but also makes them incredibly difficult to clean thoroughly. Toothbrush bristles often cannot reach into the deepest grooves, and even children with solid brushing habits can miss these areas consistently. Sealants effectively fill in and seal those grooves, removing the hiding spots that bacteria rely on to cause decay.
The material is tooth-colored and virtually invisible once applied. Most patients cannot feel a sealant at all after the first day or two.
Who Should Get Dental Sealants?
Dental sealants are commonly recommended for children and teens as their permanent molars come in, helping protect teeth during cavity-prone years. However, adults with healthy back teeth, deep grooves, or a higher risk of decay may benefit as well.
At West McKinney Dental & Orthodontics, we evaluate each patient individually and recommend sealants only when they are truly beneficial.

How Long Do Sealants Last?
Dental sealants are durable and can last anywhere from 5 to 10 years with proper care. They hold up well to normal chewing forces, though habits like chewing ice, biting fingernails, or grinding teeth can wear them down more quickly.
Our team checks the condition of existing sealants at every routine exam. If a sealant has chipped, worn down, or partially detached, it can be easily reapplied to restore full protection. Catching a compromised sealant at a routine visit is always preferable to finding a cavity in a tooth that was previously sealed.
With good oral hygiene and regular checkups, sealants remain one of the best long-term investments in a child's dental health.
